As the price of bitcoin increased by almost 400% cryptocurrency-related email compromise attacks increased by 192% between October 2020 and May 2021, as per a report by Barracuda Networks.
Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky had earlier reported that crytojacking scams were on the rise again after declining for two years with cryptocurrency gaining popularity.
A malware called ‘Crackonosh’, for instance, was using free versions of popular games like Grand Theft Auto V, NBA 2K19 and Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 to trick players into installation. The malware then used the players’ computing power to mine for a private cryptocurrency called Monero. So far, the hackers are estimated to have made over $2 million in XMR through the scam.
